Arriving in Lisbon by Train

Identify your Lisbon arrival station, choose the onward Metro or road journey, and plan the last stretch to your accommodation.

Lisbon has several main railway stations. The right way to reach your accommodation depends on which station is printed on your ticket, not simply on the word “Lisbon”. Check that station, the full address of your stay and your check-in instructions before the train arrives.

Which station am I arriving at?

Lisboa Oriente is the major eastern interchange in Parque das Nações. It connects with the Red Metro line and other trains and buses. It is convenient for the airport and the Web Summit area, but is not in the historic centre.

Santa Apolónia is closer to Alfama and the riverfront. Its Metro station is on the Blue line. If your accommodation is uphill in Alfama, check the walk from the station before deciding to carry bags; a road transfer may still stop short of a pedestrian street.

Rossio is the railway terminus used for many trips to and from Sintra. The railway station, Rossio Metro on the Green line and nearby Restauradores on the Blue line are different entrances. Use the exact location on your ticket or route planner.

Cais do Sodré connects the Cascais coastal railway with the Green Metro line and river ferries. Sete Rios is a rail and coach interchange near Jardim Zoológico Metro station on the Blue line. Check whether your ticket names a rail or coach terminal and allow time to find its entrance.

See CP's Lisbon network and tickets and the Metro map for the current connections. If your ticket only names “Lisboa”, check the service's actual stop before choosing a hotel transfer.

From the platform to your accommodation

The Metro usually works well with light bags and a stay close to a station. A train ticket does not automatically include a Metro trip; check the ticket conditions and see our public-transport fares guide. If you need step-free access, check the live Metro lift and line status before setting out.

For several bags, children or a late arrival, compare a taxi at the rank or a ride booked through an app. Use the pickup point shown by the operator and confirm the vehicle before boarding. Fares vary; use the meter or the app quote rather than an estimate in an article. In a restricted or pedestrian street, confirm with your host where a car can legally stop and how far you must walk. Keep the apartment's postcode, entrance and check-in contact available offline.

Can I leave my luggage at the station?

CP lists lockers inside Oriente, Rossio, Cais do Sodré and Sete Rios. The maximum stay is 24 hours, and access follows each station's opening hours. Santa Apolónia is not on CP's in-station locker list; a separate commercial locker location is nearby. Check availability, dimensions and collection time before leaving your bags. Our luggage-storage guide compares those and other city options.

If you are driving instead of taking the Metro, read the parking and controlled-access guide before heading into a historic neighbourhood.

If Lisbon is only one stop on a longer trip, our guide to trains and coaches from Lisbon explains how to check the right departure station for Porto, Coimbra, Évora or the Algarve.
