Parking can take longer than the drive into Lisbon. If your accommodation is in Alfama, Bairro Alto or another old quarter, ask for its exact vehicle access and unloading instructions before choosing a route. A street that looks passable on a map may be restricted or too narrow for an easy arrival.
Can I drive up to the apartment to unload?
Ask your host for the exact address, entrance and vehicle-access instructions before setting off. Parts of Alfama, Bairro Alto, Castelo and Santa Catarina/Bica are controlled-access areas. According to EMEL's historic-neighbourhood rules, entry requires the appropriate EMEL authorisation, including for eligible visitors or loading and unloading. A booking or an invitation from your host does not by itself grant access. If entry is not authorised, agree on a legal nearby drop-off or park first and walk the final stretch. This matters especially with bags, children or limited mobility.
Street parking: read the sign on that street
EMEL manages paid on-street parking across much of Lisbon. Its current tariff page says there are four active tariff bands, with prices and time limits depending on the zone. New rates have been phased in since August 2026, so a payment machine or app can still show a transitional price. Use the EMEL tariff map and, above all, the local sign for the payment hours, maximum stay and any resident restriction. Do not assume a nearby street has the same conditions.
You can pay at an EMEL machine using coins or MB WAY, where available, or through EMEL's ePark app. In the app, check that the mapped location, tariff and registration plate are correct before starting the session; stop or extend it as needed. See EMEL's current payment methods if your preferred method is unavailable. Keep the confirmation until you leave. A coloured zone is not permission to leave a car overnight or beyond its posted limit.

Daily tickets and garages
EMEL lists specially signed daily-ticket spaces in some green and yellow areas. The published 2026 amounts are €2.15 in green and €3.15 in yellow areas, generally Monday to Friday, 09:00–19:00. They apply only where the daily-ticket sign is present, not to every green or yellow bay. Check the map and available capacity before relying on one.
For a stay longer than a street-space limit, compare a public garage near your accommodation. EMEL’s garage directory identifies individual car parks, including facilities with resident-only or subscription-only access. Check the specific facility’s public entry, height limit, opening hours and current tariff before driving there. An apparently convenient garage on a map may not accept short-stay visitors.
Restricted areas, fines and special needs
Some historic neighbourhoods have controlled vehicle access. Your accommodation can explain whether a guest can enter to unload and what details it needs in advance; consult EMEL’s restricted-area information for the current rules. Do not follow a navigation app past a restriction sign.
If you receive a parking notice, use the instructions printed on it or EMEL’s official channels. We do not give a generic fine amount or promise an early-payment discount, because the procedure depends on the infringement. Rules for disabled parking permits and electric vehicles also depend on the bay, permit and current regulation; confirm them with EMEL before leaving the car.
If you will mostly stay in the centre, consider leaving the vehicle in an appropriate garage and exploring on foot or by public transport. Driving to every attraction rarely saves time once parking is included.
