From Lisbon to Other Portuguese Cities

Compare train and coach for Porto, Coimbra, Évora and the Algarve; check which Lisbon station or terminal your ticket actually uses.

Going beyond Lisbon is straightforward once you know the exact departure point and the station closest to your destination. “Lisboa” on a search result does not mean every train or coach leaves from the same place. Book on the operator's site and read the full stop names on your ticket before arranging the journey from your accommodation.

Train or coach: which should I choose?

For Porto and Coimbra, compare CP's Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services with a coach. For Évora, CP also publishes an Intercidades route from Lisbon. For Faro and the Algarve, check whether your chosen train ends near the place you will actually stay: a station such as Albufeira-Ferreiras is not the beach or old town. CP's timetables and online ticket office show the current route and fare for a specific date. An advance ticket may have different change or refund conditions from a flexible one.

A coach may be useful if its destination stop is closer to your address, or if train times do not work for your day. Compare the whole trip, including the journey to the Lisbon terminal and the last transfer at the other end, rather than price alone. Rede Expressos is one operator to check; the terminal, intermediate stops and luggage rules depend on the particular service. Do not use an old timetable or assume a coach ticket is valid on a different operator.

Which Lisbon station do I leave from?

Many long-distance trains call at Oriente and some also at other Lisbon stations, but the stops vary by service. Check the origin printed on your CP ticket and the platform shown on the departure boards. Oriente is on the Red Metro line; if your ticket says Sete Rios or Entrecampos, plan for those different stations instead. Our Lisbon station guide explains their connections.

For coaches, Sete Rios has its own official terminal site and is near Jardim Zoológico Metro; other departures may use Oriente or a different stop. A coach platform is not the same thing as a train platform in a shared interchange. Read the operator's terminal instructions and arrive with enough time to find the correct bay.

What should I check before travel day?

Confirm the date, departure and arrival stop, any change of train, luggage allowance and ticket conditions in the booking confirmation. Check CP's service warnings before a rail trip and the coach operator's notices for a bus. If you travel with a dog, child or bicycle, check the rule for that specific service, not only local Lisbon transport rules. Our family and dog guide covers the differences.

Leave a buffer if you are connecting to a flight or an event. Keep the ticket available offline and confirm the return journey before leaving for a day trip. For Sintra and Cascais, use the separate local-train day-trip guide; those journeys are not booked like a long-distance seat reservation.
