Many layers of Lisbon

Mouraria brings narrow streets, fado heritage and a varied food culture together close to the centre. Start around Martim Moniz, then step into the lanes to see how quickly the scale of the city changes.

Walk with curiosity

Rua da Mouraria and the streets leading towards the castle invite a walk without too many fixed stops. Look for small squares, tiled façades and places to pause, while remembering that these are also the entrances and daily routes of people who live here.

Fado is part of the neighbourhood’s identity. If you want to hear a performance, check the venue’s current programme and booking arrangements rather than expecting music in every café.

Make lunch part of the visit

The area’s restaurants offer a way to explore its different communities as well as Portuguese cooking. Read the menu, ask about unfamiliar dishes and choose somewhere that fits your appetite. Nearby Cervejaria Ramiro is an option for a seafood meal; our separate guide covers reservations and the address.

For a longer walk, continue uphill towards Graça. The change from narrow lanes to open viewpoints makes a satisfying contrast, provided you have time for the climb.

Arriving and moving around

Use the map and transport notes to choose your starting point. The lower streets and the routes up the hill are quite different experiences: if steps or gradients are an issue, check the specific path before leaving. A taxi or Uber can bring you to the edge of the area, but not every lane is accessible by car.
