MAAT makes sense when you want art and architecture to balance Belém's monuments. It is a museum campus by the Tagus, not just the striking white building in photographs. The operator describes two complementary spaces: MAAT Gallery for changing contemporary exhibitions and MAAT Central, the former Tejo power station, with the Electricity Factory and other displays.

What should I check before buying a ticket?

Start with the current programme and visit page. Exhibitions change, so the reason to visit this month may differ from the one in an older article. Confirm which buildings and exhibitions your ticket covers. The operator distinguishes ticket prices for residents in Portugal and visitors from abroad; bring the required proof if you expect a reduced rate. We avoid quoting one price as if it applied to everyone.

The usual schedule is Wednesday to Monday, 10:00–19:00; the museum is closed on Tuesdays and selected holidays. Give yourself time for both buildings if they interest you, but do not add a full MAAT visit after an already crowded day inside Jerónimos and the Belém Tower.

Getting there and access inside

MAAT is on Avenida Brasília by the river. From central Lisbon you can take the Cascais-line train to Belém or a current Carris service towards Belém, then walk to the museum. Check the walking approach for the entrance you need; Belém station is not a Metro stop. The operator's accessibility page describes ramps, lifts, adapted toilets and wheelchairs on request. Confirm the route for a particular exhibition if you have specific needs.

Large bags and umbrellas are restricted inside, but the visitor page lists lockers. Check size and availability if you are between checkout and a flight; our luggage guide covers larger bags. Pets are generally excluded except guide dogs under the operator's rules.

What pairs well with MAAT?

The riverside walk and Belém neighbourhood are the natural continuation. If you have a full day in the area, choose one substantial museum or monument in the morning and another in the afternoon. Jerónimos Monastery has different hours and timed entry; Pastéis de Belém works as a break between stops. Our one- to three-day plan keeps Belém together rather than sending you back and forth across town.
