The Soul of Old Lisbon

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading down the slope between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river. Its name comes from the Arabic "al-hamma," meaning hot fountains or baths. Having survived the 1755 earthquake, Alfama retains its original Moorish street plan.
