A garden at the centre of the day

Príncipe Real suits an afternoon that mixes browsing with doing very little. The garden gives the neighbourhood a natural meeting point, with streets of shops, cafés and restaurants stretching out around it.

Browse without a checklist

Come for the independent shops and the buildings as much as for anything you intend to buy. Embaixada is one of the area’s familiar stops, while the surrounding streets reward a slower look at windows, doorways and small businesses.

Between shops, return to the garden for a break. It is a useful way to keep the visit relaxed rather than turning it into a sequence of appointments.

Add a little green

The Botanical Garden is another possibility nearby. Check its opening arrangements before making it the centre of your visit, and leave enough time to enjoy the grounds rather than fitting them into the last few minutes of the afternoon.

For an evening continuation, explore the neighbourhood’s restaurants or head towards Bairro Alto. Chiado also pairs well with the area if you want to connect gardens, bookshops and cafés in one walk.

Planning your route

Príncipe Real sits above the lower city, so take gradients into account when choosing a route. The practical notes list public transport options; check current services before relying on a particular connection. If you take a taxi or Uber, use a specific address or the garden as your destination and confirm the pickup point for the return.
