If the word fado appears everywhere in Alfama but you would like to understand the music before choosing an evening show, start at the Museu do Fado. It is an indoor stop at the lower edge of the neighbourhood, useful on a rainy day or as a pause between Alfama's slopes. The museum's exhibitions, recordings and archive give context that a dinner advertisement cannot.

What kind of visit is it?

This is a museum visit, not a live fado performance included with your ticket. The institution also runs a changing programme of exhibitions and events; check its official site if you hope to hear a concert on a particular date. Its audioguide is listed in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, with a version for children. A relaxed visit can be paired with a walk through Alfama rather than another timed attraction immediately afterwards.

The museum lists a €5 standard admission and concessions on its visitor page, checked in October 2026. It normally opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30. It closes on named public holidays; verify the programme and the ticket conditions for your date. If you have a Lisboa Card, check whether the museum is included under the current card rules rather than assuming every concert is covered too.

How do I get there?

The entrance is at Largo do Chafariz de Dentro 1, near the lower part of Alfama. The museum lists Santa Apolónia and Terreiro do Paço as nearby Metro options and several Carris bus routes. A short-looking walk through old lanes can contain steps or steep paving; choose the route that suits your group. The museum's access information says it has wheelchair access and two manual wheelchairs to borrow. Contact it for the exact approach and assistance you require.

After the visit, continue through Alfama or go up towards Castelo de São Jorge if you have the energy. For an evening performance, our Alfama page names a couple of venues, but check each venue's current programme, menu and booking terms directly. The museum is a good introduction; it is not a substitute for hearing fado live.
